Introduction to the blog...

Hi, my name's Toby Wildgoose. I'm a 21 year old who's obsessed by sport, so much so, that I am looking to become a sports journalist/media officer in later life.

I've set up this blog not only so that I can improve and refine my writing skills, but also to provide a platform for potential employers to view my work.

I have already developed a small portfolio of my work, with my experience in the industry including: written match reports for junior football teams, published work at numerous EFL clubs in a variety of formats, and work experience placements at Chesterfield FC and Rotherham United Community Sports Trust - to see my full portfolio click here: http://goo.gl/VWws3H.

I hope to post as often as possible on this blog about anything that is sport related. Please find the time to read any of my posts.

Any comments or suggestions on how I can improve the blog would be greatly appreciated, and I would also be happy to receive any other suggestions for work experience. Please comment on here, email me (tobywildgoose@gmail.com), or even tweet me (@TobyWildgoose). Cheers!

Chesterfield FC Work Experience - February 2014

In February 2014, I took part on a one week work experience placement (Monday 24th – Friday 28th) at Chesterfield FC. During the week I worked between the hours of 9am-5pm.

My view.

On the placement I had the opportunity to write a youth team match report (http://www.chesterfield-fc.co.uk/news/article/20140224-youth-report-1380833.aspx) and wrote numerous pieces of work for the match day programme (example below).

As well as writing a number my own pieces for the programme (FORM GUIDE and NEXT IN TOWN), I also got the chance to interview and then write up a number of staff member's programme notes. Examples include: FROM THE BOARDROOM with CHRIS TURNER, DEVELOPMENT CENTRE with LIAM SUTCLIFFE, ACADEMY UPDATE, CAPTAIN'S COLUMN and finally, the BEST & WORST piece.

During the placement, I was also offered the opportunity to tweet off of the Chesterfield FC official Twitter account. I was given the task of researching the prices of the Wembley merchandise that the clubs superstore was selling, before putting out a tweet advertising the stock. Here are my two tweets and photographs:

Due to the fact that I was working with Nick Johnson, an employee of Sky Sports, I also got the chance to visit Scunthorpe United to interview manager Russ Wilcox for Soccer Saturday. This was a good experience for me as I got to research information for Nick on the recent Scunthorpe vs Portsmouth FC fixture, as well as prepare some questions for him to ask.

Finally, on Monday 3rd March, I got to shadow Nick in the press box at the Chesterfield vs Portsmouth FC match which was shown live on Sky Sports. I also got to write a match report in the press box and this may yet be published on the official club website.
